Blender (free), Maya, Lightwave, Softimage, Milkshape.

Add Truespace too

You could actually try gMax, a free alternative to Max, that basically has all the major features (assuming you''re excluding 3DSMax due to price). www.discreet.com

Too much. Somewhere around $3600 last time I checked (which was a while ago). Milkshape is like $20, Blender is free. Maya is above $8000 if I remember.
