simplex noise problem: boundary between simpleces not smooth

After reading the article "Simplex Noise Demystified" I thought I had a decent grasp of the topic and tried to create a noise generator for the terrain in my minecraft clone. The output is decent but it has some really hard edges that show up in the output. Does anyone have an Idea what may cause this?
