On the subject of changing things to lowercase - I once came across a strange issue with a localization system where certain strings wouldn't be locallzed - the UI would display the localization key instead of the desired text. I had a look in the code and all seemed fine until I realized that the keys were being stored in mixed case, but when the system went to do key lookup, it converted the entire key to lower-case before doing the lookup...
