Hi I plan to go back to programming as my musical career isn't going too well. I plan to do my first game (so far I learned basics of C and I can make game like Zork) I plan to learn some free graphic engine and was thinking about sdlib (I found really good tutorials for it). Is it good for beginners or should check something else first.

If you're interested in learning the nitty-gritty of game development, you can stay on the path you're on. However, I recommend trying out an Engine like http://unity3d.com/ for a week or two just to see how you like it.

I'm one man studio so I think that unity is too much for me (for now at least) I want my first or second game to be 2d (I think that engine is much simpler this way and work process is faster with no 3d models and textures, correct me if I'm wrong)

You're right about keeping your first couple of games in 2d, but you might be wrong about Unity. :)

Though Unity's main application is 3d, it also has support for 2d. (Plus you can always just render everything in 3d, but keep the player & enemies locked on 2 axes)

I started messing around with Unity a couple of weeks after the local game jam because of how impressed I was by the unity entries. The two things that excite me the most are the excellent tutorials and the integration with the asset store. There are lots of free assets you can use (and plenty more for pay) that look nice so you don't have to know how to do 3d modeling yet.

Here's a couple of their tutorials:
