Depends on what you want to do with it. Bike to work/school? Fine

Go mountain biking? Triathlon? Lycra-clad latte sipping (aka road-biking :) )?

You'll very quickly find that your $100 bike will hinder you in those pursuits.
A $100 mountain bike won't have disc brakes for example.
A $100 road bike will weigh much more than a quality one.

I consider myself a pretty mediocre mountain biker, but even I wouldn't consider spending less than $1000 on a new bike. Hell, my mtb shoes cost more than $100.
