Fatal server error: Caught signal 11.

Why do I have to face all possible problems to get somthing working?!? I solve one, another pops. Now, when I try to run opengl app (for example Nehe Lessons, TuxRacer,..)it appears fatal server error. I put the log file here. Hopefully someone can help me to solve the problem. Signal 11 is a segment fault, so it''s a perfectly normal crash.

It seems like the installation of your NVidia drivers isn''t as it should be. Now I''ve had a similar problem once but I don''t really know what solved it. In any case, you should download the latest source archive (not the rpm, I''ve always had problems with binary packages) of the NVidia driver. Make sure it''s for the correct kernel version (like SMP vs. UP or something) and make sure you read every tiny bit of the readme. I''m afraid I can''t give more advice :/

It might be this.

Login being root -> run tuxracer -> if that works then login as normal user. If tuxracer does not run you need to give
users right to use nvidia drivers.

If I remember right they are /dev/nvidia*(check ) so chmod 777 /dev/nvidia* should do that.

I already had my problems with permissions
First it worked in root only and other users didn''t even start the graphical environment. But I did what nvidia readme troubleshooting told (removed :s from /etc/security/console.perms and run "chmod 0666 /dev/nvidia*" and "chown root /dev/nvidia*").

I''v tried to build NVIDIA_kernel and NVIDIA_GLX from dources but errors occured. Now I know I need to install kernel-source to build it. But I can''t install kernel-sources since I don''t have the required ncurses-devel-5.2-16 and I couldn''t yet find it.

Is it always that hard?? Or am I going with ''not so good'' distribution (Mandrake 8.1).

By the way, where can I find step-by-step install guide for Debian over netwokr? I''w read their quides but they don''t help much and I didn''t manage to install it.

That''s the error, i guess =) Have you already tried to force install your glx rpm??, i had similar problems with redhat 7.1 and it helped.

I think I did something like that:
rpm -ihv --force NVIDIA_GLX.rpm

I am going to assume that your XF86Config file is setup correctly. I am also going to assume, because you are using Mandrake, that your symlinks are messed up in /usr/lib/libGL* after installing the NVIDIA_*rpm''s.

I suppose you could do the following:
rpm -e NVIDIA_glx
rpm -e NVIDIA_kernel

rpm -Ivh NVIDIA_kernel*blah* --force --nodeps
rpm -Ivh NVIDIA_GLX*blah* --force --nodeps
THEN
manually go and check by hand your /usr/lib/libGL* symlinks and verify that everything links where it should. i.e. What''s listed in the README

After doing to that you may want to do a google search for a script referred to as nv_check.sh and then run it. It can help diagnose install problems from what I have heard. I am not personally familiar with this last step as I am not using a broken, erm, different compiler with my distro and my sources are installed and can build everything just fine with the tarz and information contained in the README/pdf docs they supply. I have however heard many a great success story with the nv_check.sh from the us.openprojects.net #nvidia channel in determining sources of problems.

P.S. I hope this helps out and not breaks your system. I don''t run Mandrake so I''m not familiar with their ins and outs. Second of all the comment about the compiler: I should double check my facts before running my mouth but last time I did check Redhat uses a broken, DOH! - *different*, compiler hence the reason they have both gcc and kgcc (kgcc for compiling the kernel) Mandrake is based off Redhat so I don''t know if they went back to the supported (read as the preferred) 2.95.xx compiler or not. I use also mandrake 8.1 and nvidia drivers so it works.

It is libncurses5-devel rpm if I remember right.

If I remember you do not have CD''s so go to software manager and
define new ftp directory to sunet or what ever ftp you are using if it is not allready defined. Then either using software manager or urpmi command in terminal install kernel-source it should install also all required others rpm''s.
