Alpha Blending

Unfortunately, no hardware supports alpha channels in DirectDraw blits.

You''ll have to use Direct3D. I suggest you look at the D3DX helper library which comes with the SDK. It has a sprite object which supports alpha channels, rotations, filtered zooms etc.

[hardware vendors don''t see much point in exposing new features for DirectDraw past the basic set required for the Windows GUI. 3D capabilities is what sets them apart, so the manufacturers have been concentrating most of their efforts on those since about 1996!]
