giftgaming in-game ads - Your feedback is needed

Hey, we're giftgaming -- a Cambridge (UK) based in-game ad startup.

We got absolutely sick of seeing intrusive ads in games and diminishing the gaming experience (particularly on mobile).

So, our idea is instead to deliver surprise in-game gifts which contain sponsored powerups and currency (not the same as "branded powerups"). All the player sees is a random gift icon, which the game developer controls how often it appears and how it looks. See this example screenshot.

If the player feels like it, they can tap the gift icon to receive a free powerup/currency from a major brand (and they are also sometimes presented an opportunity to save a coupon). See this example screenshot.

Can anyone give us feedback on:

  1. Is our idea a good fix?
  2. Are there better ways to do it?
  3. Whether anyone wants to do a self-service test-drive? If so, download one of our new plugins from: www.giftgaming.com/publishers

Technical Explanation:

  • The game developer sets up gifts on the giftgaming dashboard - each gift has a gift code eg. "SWEET_ZAPPER".
  • Using the dashboard, the game developer picks which brands they want in their game.
  • The player gives their preferences the first time giftgaming is enabled in a game.
  • Our plugin polls our stateless HTTP API service (running on Scala + Lift) with gift requests every so often
  • If there is a gift available for the player's demographic, a "gift response" is returned containing a gift code.
  • The game developer implements one of the pre-defined gift callbacks (eg. giftOpened()) and maps a function to each received gift code.
