how do you work out the direction to move a third person camera?

if i wanted to make a third person camera, how do you work how the yaw direction and to move in that direction, prefilbly, i want to be using directx input for mouse data, thanks if you can help

Except in very rare cases (marble-rolling games, etc.) movement is never based on the camera. It is exactly the opposite.
Move the player and then adjust the camera accordingly.

This applies to your case. Move the player forward via its forward vector and then update your camera.

Do you mean a third person camera (which "follows" a player as L.Spiro mentions), or a "free" camera (which moves throughout a scene by user control)?
