Fastest Map Format

I''m currently working on a 3D engine using DX8, and am wondering which map method would result in the highest frame-rate? I''m thinking a depth/octree method might be the fastest... but I know next to nothing on how todays 3D hardware processes vertices, and what sorts of bottlenecks there are... Any thoughts? -Lonely
