Tips on recreating a city

Does anybody have some tips on how to do this the easiest way. Do you know of any tools to make buildings in 3dstudio. And if you know of any comprehensive tutorials on this subject i would appreciate it.

at least 3dsmax tutorial (cd-2) came with a easy city-sample.

create a big, flat box with lets say 40x40 height and width segments. create another box, its gonna be a skyscraper.
now use the 'scatter' (i think its called so) function, bound the skyscraper box to the flat one, adjust the options of the 'scatter' tool, and you'll get a simple city model. now put a simple wall/windows texture on the buildings and adjust it with UVWmap. done.
