I thought I'd reach out to the great folks here for some help on this. I thought it can't hurt to ask. There is something sort of airy about this bass tone, I can't figure out they're getting that sound..any thoughts?

Base starts around 0:40.

That is a great bass sound. It's a synth bass that comes from a Korg MS-20 which is a fantastic synth in general, they've used it on a lot of their tracks. Then it's gated for that pumping effect. There's also a filter on there as well, probably a mutator some kind (which they also use quite often). Finally it's warm enough that there is probably some kind of tape filter as well like am Ampex or a Sony.

If you wanted to do this yourself and don't have access to expensive vintage gear I would use the following:
Kord Legacy Collection plugin which has the MS-20.
Any kind of gate plugin.
The Softtube Mutronics Mutator.

Waves J37 or Kramer Tape
