Blending textures

Hi, I am working on a tile based game. I render the terrain layer with Direct 3d Now, I want to do the terrain transitions blending two textures (ie water-coast) The idea is to make the textures edges transparent. Do you know how to do that? I believe that I must use alpha blending. Please, if you have an example it will be better Cheers Arcangel
