OpenGL getting bitmaps from openGL

Hi, When using fonts you usually take some of the wgl* xgl* agl* calls to get access to the system fonts. These methods load bitmaps of these fonts to OpenGL. Is there a way to read the bitmaps back from OpenGL ? Or are there methods that write the bitmaps into a buffer or something like that. ? Thanks in advance.
