What should i use to create a good performing voxel engine?

For some time now I've been wanting to create something akin to Minecraft's world of cubes, I want to make something for mobile, but voxel engines are performance heavy, so i'm not quite sure what to use. I've considered using Unity, but I have a feeling I will be able to get much better performance by doing it from scratch with some other framework. I'm not afarid of a challenge, but I would like the gained performance to outwieght the extra time spent developing, so a few fps difference isn't really worth it, if I have to write a 3D engine frmo scratch. Fel free to suggest whatever you think is best for my purpose.

Thanks!

I'm hoping the slides for this upcoming conference talk go up on the web: http://gcap.com.au/sessions/a-custom-batching-and-lighting-system-in-unity-3d/

They made a minecraft-esque game in Unity, and are talking about what it took :)
