Guess what.
The visual studio 2013 community already got a 3d modeller built-in
I don't even need to pay for a 3d asset converter and anything like that.
It is as easy as that

It's nice for simple things and flat objects.

Making a character or a complex model isn't worth the time and effort.

It isn't a bad 3D editor and is good for viewing and fixing small modeling errors.

If you want free 3D modeling software I would recommend Blender over all the others, I would even recommend it over most pay software.

I used to be able to open DAE files and debug / perform minor tweaks to the XML. Now it renders the mesh instead. Not helpful :P

One thing it's very good for is fixing axes, for example if you've purchased an fbx model with Y = up, and your engine expects Z = up (simplygon does this to generated LODs), this can be done quickly as you already have visual studio loaded and don't need to faff around loading blender and remembering it's arcane keypresses...

Blender's UI

What UI?

Do you mean that arcane sequence of button presses you have to memorise to bring up features and do things? I think the blender devs spent too long playing with emacs. Jus' sayin'...
