Weird Overlapping Squares

I am writing an isometric game engine like the one in Diablo2, but I have ran into a snag that''s really frustrating! To speed up the engine I only update areas of the screen that have changed recently. This keeps my game from running like a snail. The only problem is that when a wall occludes a tile that will be updated, the tile is drawn over top of the wall! Does anyone know how to get around this without slowing the game down too much?

Thanks for the advice. I didn''t really think about a z-buffer much since my game is 2D only, and z-buffers are more of a 3D thing. I''ll try it.
