Transparent and Z Buffer Enable

I want to render a 3D Object(e.g, a mesh) to be a transparent look, then how to set the light and material? I can''t set them right. But when I use Z buffer enabled (of cause, no transparent, right?), it is ok. And I want to know when at the transparent render state how much the order of renderring objects is related to the transparent image.
