Boat wake trail

Hi,

 

How would you guys do boat wake trail on top of FFT water?

 

i.e. 

 

Do you render a mesh created by the boat's path with a transparent texture? But how would you get it moving vertically with the FFT waves without it being a dense grid?

 

Perhaps a render to texture and project it back to the grid?

 

Any idea would be nice.

the way I've done is to render a mask into the alpha channel while rendering the reflection texture. very simple and always worked flawlessly (works also for waves towards the beach and if you want to add some fake foam peaks on the waves.

So you would tile a foam texture across the entire surface of the ocean plane, and use the alpha channel to set it's opacity on top of the water?
