[D3D12]: D3D12_RESOURCE_DIMENSION_UNKNOWN?

It looks like you're allowed to create a resource with an unknown dimension, as opposed to an explicit buffer, texture{1d, 2d, 3d}.

 

What does that mean, practically? Is it possible to create a raw buffer and then create views that map it as 2D, for instance? The MSDN docs don't really explain what this means at the driver or even SDK level.

Weird. I set a small project to swap buffers with unknowns and it seemed to work fine. Didn't like textures to be unknowns though. Not really sure how this would be useful -- you can't view a buffer as a texture because how do you specify the dimensions? 

 

Edit: I think it's just creating them as buffers. The object viewer in the vs debugger lists them as buffers.
