I have a c++ app that has been developed with Visual Studio 2015. I can build and run the app just fine on Win10. However, with Win7 the building of the app works fine but launching it produces the following error:

The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005). Click OK to close the application.

If I am running the app in the debugger I can see that it fails with the following callstack:

> ntdll.dll!RtlInitAnsiString() Unknown
  ntdll.dll!string "Enabling heap debug options\n"() Unknown
  ntdll.dll!LdrpSnapIAT() Unknown
  ntdll.dll!LdrpHandleOneOldFormatImportDescriptor() Unknown
  ntdll.dll!LdrpProcessStaticImports() Unknown
  ntdll.dll!LdrpLoadImportModule() Unknown
  ntdll.dll!LdrpHandleOneOldFormatImportDescriptor() Unknown
  ntdll.dll!LdrpProcessStaticImports() Unknown
  ntdll.dll!LdrpLoadImportModule() Unknown
  ntdll.dll!LdrpHandleOneOldFormatImportDescriptor() Unknown
  ntdll.dll!LdrpProcessStaticImports() Unknown
  ntdll.dll!LdrpLoadImportModule() Unknown
  ntdll.dll!LdrpHandleOneOldFormatImportDescriptor() Unknown
  ntdll.dll!LdrpProcessStaticImports() Unknown
  ntdll.dll!LdrpInitializeProcess() Unknown
  ntdll.dll!string "Enabling heap debug options\n"() Unknown
  ntdll.dll!LdrInitializeThunk() Unknown

I assume the error is the same as the log output is Exception thrown at 0x00000000775D20B4 (ntdll.dll) in app.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x000007FEF3301456, ie. the same error code.

However, the strings in the callstack suggests running with a debug heap. The app is run in release mode, so at least without the debugger it should run with the normal heap.

The app is built using the VS2015 toolkit (v140) and I have the Visual C++ redistributables installed on the Win7 machine.

Any idea how to start untangling this?

Cheers!
