Mesh woes

I have a fairly complex situation with meshes here... I need meshes that use multiple texture maps and smooth groups. My problem is that since UV coordinates are assigned to each vertex and NOT to the triangles, I cannot use multiple texture maps. I figured I could make multiple models and use the UV coordinates from the tris instead of those of the vertices. My "beta" routines just drew polys, not meshes, so I could get the geometry loader working correctly. Now I need to make it work with models. Is there a way I can use a single model with multiple textures and individual UV coordinates for each tri? How do I get smooth groups working? They are seemingly incompatible with D3D meshes.
