I'm building a first person shooter from the ground up in C++ using OpenGL. It's coming along great but there's a few details about FPS games I don't know yet. How do you handle drawing the main players(yours) hand and gun? Since you can't see your body I imagined that it would be inefficient to draw the entire character model. Do you have a separate draw command that only draws one bicep/forearm/hand of the model?

Depends on the game. The vast majority would only draw the arm/wrist/hand (what you can see). In a multiplayer game there would be two or more models. One for first person and one for third person. You might also get another model for 1st person shadows (since seeing only a shadow of your arm would look weird). Some games do have a full model for the body and some use the same model for both 1st and 3rd person such as Arma. It really totally depends on what you decide to do. It's also worth noting that the arms and hands take up a HUGE amount of screen space in a 1st person game so ideally you would want them to be quite detailed but seeing someone else's arms from a meter or so away wouldn't require as much detail so there's also things like that to consider.

You could happily get away with just a arm and a hand and not have any shadowing for the player for a 1st person game. I bet most people wouldn't even notice the lack of shadows or lack of a body unless they specifically look for it.
