OpenGL Modifying VBO in real time or easier method?

Basically what I'd like to do is to change graphics of the walls when player is behind them to give more visibility what's behind the walls.

The walls position etc. is stored inside VBO once and rendered.

I haven't yet tried anything but I've read about glBufferSubData and glMapBuffer.


From what I've read I could use one of those methods but I was thinking is there an other method in OpenGL how I could achieve effect like in, for example Fallout 2:



If someone could give a clue where to look at to achieve this kind of effect that would be great, if it's possible
