3D games: black outlines around charaters

Are you referring to the pixel like artifacts you can see when 2D screen space shaders are used?

If you are then it's because the sampler isn't precise or isn't using anti-aliasing.

Yes - the effect is similar to black halos around mipmapped alpha tested textures, and blending the background into the edges.

 

Not always noticeable.  Haven't even really noticed _when_ its noticeable. <g>.
