use unity or another engine

Game maker is good for a 2D engine, it is also easy to use.

There are more powerful 2D engines, however they are more complicated to use. As a example if you just switched to Unity, have no scripting experience and don't know how to optimize 2D art; then not only would it be more difficult to make the game, you also wouldn't even get a 10%-20% increase in performance.

If however you knew some scripting, understood how Unity's batching worked and understood texture atlasing, your game could gain a 100% - 140% performance boost; although you will still be using a more difficult engine.

I recommend you keep using Gamemaker, if for some reason your game can't reach your goals with Gamemaker then switch to a other engine.

Also note this if you are tempted to use Unity, it's a script heavy engine. There is even some 2D art that you can't use in Unity without scripting a tool for using it.
