Loading screens

Recommended Posts

What game engine are you using?

I just wanted to get an idea of how it would be implemented but I'd preferably use UE4 for implementing it.

Technically noyou don't need to use more than one thread to implement a loading screen. You can timeslice the load up and do parts of it while you pump the rendering and input response, and such, but that does require you to be able to timeslice the load. If you're going to be reading a multi-gigabyte file with a single blocking IO call, well, you're out of luck. You'll have to use more than one thread (doing the blocking load on that thread) or change your IO to use some asynchronous API (and thus have somebody else deal, potentially, with the threading issues).

Fundamentally all you're doing in a loading screen is pumping the main game loop until you get a signal from some background (loading) thread that all the work is done, and then moving on.
