Landing an Internship/Job(Programming)

Hey everyone,

I am a music composition major in my 3rd year of college who is looking to get going in the games industry by being a programmer.  I started with Unity and javascript scripting 4 years ago, but switched over to UE4 about 2 years ago and learned blueprints/C++ and I am currently writing my own 2d engine in C++ with SDL.  I am starting to look at internships or jobs for this Summer in the Seattle area and want to get some advice on how to proceed.

I have 2 options(maybe more, if any of you have ideas):

1.  Continue creating my 2d game engine and become proficient at using SDL and C++ to create lower level systems and such.

2.  Switch back to my UE4 project, an arena shooter.  It already has wall running, flipping, and multiple types of explosion based weaponry but needs some serious polish.

While I am primarily interested in games, I wouldn't be opposed to working on more enterprise software.  I really just want to get my feet wet with programming in a professional environment.  What are your thoughts or ideas about landing a first programming job?

Homebuilt engines don't generally make for stunning portfolio pieces. Unless it's enabling you to build something that isn't possible in current off-the-shelf engines, it's probably not a great portfolio project.

Also tends to be the case that having one polished project is worth more than several unfinished ones.

What specific aspect of games programming are you interested in getting into?

While it never hurts to know low-level C++, you're unlikely to get all that much mileage out of it working on enterprise software (most enterprise shops use Java, NodeJS, and so on).

@swiftcoder I like building anything that's reusable so that would be systems and tooling.  I don't really enjoy the web stuff I have tried doing(html, css, JS), and I don't know any java although I have heard it's similar to C# which I used briefly when I checked out iphone development.  Would it be best to finish my UE4 game at this point?

A programming portfolio needs to have games in it. Finish that one and then make another. If that one is a solo, it would look good to have a collaborative project too.

I wouldn't recommend putting anything in your portfolio that is NOT complete. It must be complete and polished. That'll look good to an employer. Seeing a lot of work is nice, but seeing your determination to complete and fine tune is something that not everyone does.

Finish your portfolio items!

When you apply to full time jobs, make sure you have a good portfolio to show. There are interesting studios in your area, like MS Games studio, Valve, Oculus, 343 industries and others. As always, the portfolio will get you to interviews, from there you need to show your knowledge and problem solving skills.
