Why would anyone ask such question during interview in amazon lol?

Seriousely.....

The company wants to know your technical skill level, so they need a simple technical problem to discuss, yet complicated enough that tit has complications if you use it naively. They pick a commonly known problem (so they don't have to explain the program), and then want to know which solution you pick, and more importantly, why. Each solution has some bad spots (here, number of recursive calls, and amount of stored data), which is another important topic to query the candidate about. Are the bad spots known, how can they be shifted to another area, etc. In other words, how fluent are you  in understanding how to code a problem such that the bad spots are out of the way.
