Engine Options for Complex Quiz Game w/o Coding?

Recommended Posts

Wow. Thanks to both of you for letting me know it's even more complicated than I'd originally thought. 😉

I would definitely want it to be for both iOS and Android, so I'll do some more research about distribution and which engines will build and export for both.

Maybe it's the strong coffee I had today, but I'm actually feeling like I may want to get into learning how to use Unity combined with the visual scripting of Bolt. Later tonight when I crash, I may go back to being more reasonable. 😏

The game color switch was made in buildbox and instantly came to mind. I haven't really checked out the limitations there, but that would seem like your best bet for 0 code.
Another option would be Build a game Universe.
I've been following them for a while, and even though it's still in beta it looks wicked. Still in beta though, so I don't know if you'd wanna risk that.

Also, it's only 2D

Good luck with whatever you decide! :)

Thanks, Sir Pep. I was really excited learning that there were drag and drop engines like Buildbox. I just have a feeling that it can't do what I want it to do, and I'd be knee deep in the project before I found out I'd have to start over. That's why Unity with visual coding like Bolt looks attractive to me now, and I'd love to make the game 3D. But I realize it's probably a pretty steep learning curve. Then again, I might actually catch the game developing bug after this app. Who knows. It could be a new hobby.

But again, I'm high on caffeine right now. 🏂

What I'm about to say may get a little long so I'm sorry in advance! 😂

First of all getting high on caffeine is pretty fun, so I feel ya! (I once wrote an entire article in school about how much I loved coffee while I was high on the stuff)
But all that aside, @geofan all of us were created with God-given talents, and dreams, and if this is one of your dreams then don't be afraid to take it by the horns.
It's been my dream since I was a boy to make a game the likes of Harvest Moon or Stardew Valley.
I started that dream a month ago with 2 years of programming behind me and 0 experience in art besides middle school...

And dude if I have one thing to say it's that almost every day has been like being high on something!
You can see some of my art here on my blog, but the whole process has seemed to give an entirely new meaning to my Life!
If I may borrow the words of Mordeciah, It's like I was born for such a time as this!
Now I am the last person to understand this, because if you ask me God is supposed to give life meaning, and making a game doesn't seem like a very God-inspired dream, but if I have ever discovered a lot about God and just felt perfectly in his hands it's been during this whole process!

My main point is this. If you love something, and you have a dream, don't be afraid to chase it.
2 Years ago I couldn't have ever told you I'd have the grit to sit down for hours and make pixel art.

I'd have told you your crazy, and yet it's happening.
So all I can say dude is don't give up on your dreams. Whether it's this or something else, you were created specifically for that dream and it's a beautiful thing :)
God bless, and thanks to whoever was crazy enough to make it to the end of this 😏

That's awesome, Sir Pep! It's great when you can get up every day with excitement about what you're working on.

Thanks for the Sir "Pep talk"! 😊

There are very few people that find that though... And I'm Incredibly blessed to have found what I did.
I can only thank God, because there was a lot I couldn't have overcome to get here.

Keep on keeping on bro :)

Nice. Love a good pun! 😍

Unity only works with C#. I'm not sure you'll find any good game engine that works with something like bolt...

Actually, I think Bolt only works with Unity. I got about halfway through the online Bolt manual last night.

It looks great, and I'm assuming that Unity is capable of doing any type of mobile game a person can come up with, so my little quiz should be no problem, right?

Thanks

Unity can certainly handle the task.  WebGL, Android, IOS, etc.. etc..   A lot of engine to learn though.  Get a comfy chair. ;)

Thanks, Septopus. I'm still open to other options including collaboration, but I think I'll spend the next week or two cramming in Unity and Bolt tutorials. I may ditch the whole idea afterwards, but I figure it's worth this time investment just to see if it's possible for me to do on my own.
