The earlier C&Cs were jsut a top down view of the map (with isometric vehicles). Later ones used Isometric maps with voxel vehicles and isometric sprites.
By far the best RTS is still the Syndicate series

and it was even better if you knew how to access the extra 25 missions in each. (businessmen with miniguns and breifcases, driving tanks) and if you knew how to in Syndicate Wars, you could get control of the Mech in the last level. And running over people was never so much fun (or planting a bomb in a car, sending it down the road and jumping out).

Ikari Warriors was somewhat similar, I guess Maybe I''ll do a remake of that if I find the time.
