Personal project on a virtual world

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I have a basic understanding of code and algorithms, and I wish to recreate a virtual world like Second Life with more updated and modern technology. I am not really trying to recreate Second Life with all the complex assets and details, for now, I just want to create a barren land with networking capabilities and some basic physics. (So something like VRchat, but not VR and there is room for me to maybe turn the barren land to something else possibly)

See, I am not sure where to start, what tools do I use? What game engine is recommended? Do I need to use a game engine at all? I have seen people who made simple games from a code library alone, or, just use OpenGL plus some C++ OOP then came a simple ball game. (This is just rambling)

I don't know where or how to start, and I don't know what I don't know.

This personal project is really just my excuse to get away from Leetcode. Please halp.

Screw it, let's just start from scratch on Unity, they have documentation anyway.
