Open World Game Help

Recommended Posts

I need help with an open world game I'm developing. I don't know where to look or find it though. I was hoping someone here could help or point me in the right direction. I need help with 3d assets like animals/creatures, buildings, and NPCs. Unfortunately, I have very little money to use at my disposal. Can someone here either help or show me where to look for the help I need?

Start by saying what engine you are using, for example Unity or UE.

For generic meshes search CGTrader and Turbo squid, they will have enough free stuff to get up and running. You want to avoid getting things from different sources with different set ups, for example, an NPC mesh; if you change clothes, you need to hide the chest, or not if it is an open shirt. Should interchangeable heads stitch at the neck, if so where exactly? To deal with those decisions, take a look at some examples like 'Adam' in the Unity Store.

The same issues apply to animations, you need to standardise to a system, should different models share animations and therefore rigging, or are they too different. In an engine like unity, you might just need to pass an FBX file and let it do the hard work, but I am not up on those engines and the details.

For simpler things like rocks, buildings etc you still need to make decisions. For example different meshes might use different texturing techniques, like specifying materials, or just uv mapping to one or more textures. For a set of houses do they share textures or are they different, again you need to have a look at some examples, decide what you want and choose models that are close enough. Then expect many hours in Blender adapting things to fit to your standard system.
