Subject ideas for researchpaper

Recommended Posts

I am to do a research paper, following some kind of a case study, with a buddy of mine at school. As the game programming world seems so infinitely vast, and due to lack of experience, we are having problems coming up with good ideas. Does anybody have a good idea for a basic case study somehow related to games programming, ie. AI, physics, collision detection, etc? All pointers well taken, ulk & kaha

how much time do you have for this case study? a couple weeks? a term? if it is short something like ai would likely be out of the picture. exploring shadow rendering techniques might be interesting, or exploring ray tracing. ray tracing, from what i''ve heard, is not too hard to do (at least to get a simple demo working). you could extend the case study to explore either areas like diffuse lighting/soft shadows, or animation and raytracing, or realtime implementations of ray tracing, to name a few.

if the math of raytracing or shadow casting scares you (as it should) something like a comparison of visibility algorithms might be interesting. you could test pure algorithms against each other, hybrid systems, et cetera.

How about collision detection routines in 3d? Lots of info out there (on the net), easyish to code, and a good opportunity to dazzle you lecturers with some spectacular maths equations.

It''s actually a whole course called "independent studies" so we will have the whole term to do it. We are both just getting our feet wet in games programming following a course in computer graphics and want to pursue this interest further and were hoping to use this course as an opportunity to do so.The thing is that all the above mentioned ideas have come up already but are much to general. What we are trying to find is a very specific project, something on the lines of a comparison of specific terrain generation methods or testing of some other games related issues. What we are lacking is the knowledge of what specifically needs to, or can, be tested.

Many thanks again

Ps. The course is an independent project on the last term of our BSc but not a dissertation of any kind.
