How do game makers make their big scenes. Like for example, a rally game. Are they using commercial modeling applications like 3D Max and then porting their model to the game. Can terrain engines be used to create such a thing as a car racing track? If we, for example, build a very big terrain out of a height map to be used with a car racing game, how can we put different textures for different parts of the mesh? For example, how can we draw the road on this mesh? I don''t think we can use a very big texture that can map on the whole terrain, can we?

Usually they create their own modeling tool and file format and create functions to read the data and process it.

It all depends on the functionality of the engine. Usually, yes you would be able to if it was a good engine

That should be a function included in the terrain engine. Each one is different but they should be able to do that.
