wierd bug : VC++ 6 debug compile crash

I have program http://nehe.gamedev.net/contests/apocalypse2001.asp (down at Philippe''s Apocalypse 2001 Demo that will not crash if compiled with release option but it will crash after a while if compiled in debug mode. It is related to ESP register WHY? I know debug add a bunch of information in the code for debug purposes, but, it should not crash though. Another Microsoft feature or the programmer (me) is a moron?
