Height maps

Is it better to use a height map to determine height on a 3d rendered isometric landscape (think myth2)? Or is it faster to just edit a map of triangles and store the height values in the map data after editing?

Thats the same thing, a height map is just a 2D array of height values, but that array is just stored as a bitmap so you can see the height map when not running the program.
