Fixed Point Math

Could someone provide me with some information on fixed point math? Or could answer the question why float variables are multiplied by 256 and not by a value with base 10? I dont get the transformation process, ie. how the endproduct looks like and why it is done the way it is.... Well thx in advance PredeX
