beginning RPG programming
Hi everyone. To tell you the truth...me and a couple of guys for this group project are a bit stuck with this computer program assignment. Our original idea was to create an RPG type game. We''re no experts or anything and we''re desparate for any type of help. So far, we''ve learned the basics of C++ but we''re supposed this game using other areas of C++ new to us. I''ve been researching around and I looked at many sample programs and so far..things have been looking very confusing with all the Allegro library files which doesn''t seem to work on my Dev c++..DJGPP..and all these other new things. Is there anyone out there who can help me? Does anyone know how to make a simple RPG type game because I''ve done it before with an even simpler language sort of like Basic..called Turing. Any assistance would be appreciated
thx =)

what platform are you writting for?
Dos? windows? other?
its really hard to give any help since the basic idea of the rpg is pretty basic... really, where are you having problems at?

Well, for simplicity purposes, check out Simple Directmedia Layer. (www.libsdl.org)(cone3d.gamedev.net) And the tutorials here under game programming.
You should also design the RPG first, you can find some tutorials on writing design documents.
//corrections, corrections
(back to SDL) SDL is like DirectDraw, a 2d graphics API, only alot easier to use, and it is supported by every(or just about every) OS existing. (Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, whatever the heck that is , etc). It is very simple to use, and if you have any trouble with it, post your problem in the Cone3D forum.
Good luck.

Here's an easy installer for Allegro: http://www.galileo.spaceports.com/~springs/
Allegro is not that confusing of an API, really. If you need any help getting started, go here: http://www.talula.demon.co.uk/allegro/docs.html
Good luck!
[EDIT] Also, if you're stuck on some RPG programming specific things, I suggest you check out a book called "Swords and Circuitry," a part of the Prima Game Development Series.

are you looking for help in the source, the graphics or the actual bones of the rpg?
I have constructed a battle engine (currently reworking it into a more modularized design) that i adapted from many different programs i have created.
If you have ever played Final Fantasy VII, then you know what my engine is like. I wanted to emulate it because to me, it was a really great thing to work off of.
Now if you are thinking of a complete game, then whoa! Scripting, Linked Lists, The battle, the weapons, buying things, selling, its a lot to hang on to. but if you have anything to ask on the bare bone of the fighting section, ill tell you what i know.
here is a screenshot for my current engine without any of the newer graphics, just the plain old placeholder sprites and backgrounds.
