watching The Matrix, actually. I got to that scene where Neo uses that massive Gatling gun, mounted on the helicopter, to destroy that room in the skyscraper. And I got to thinking... I''d like that gun in my game. Now, having a DVD player, I could get some nice stills, and in those stills, you could see the flare of flame from the bullets as they left the spinning barrel. And anyone who''s ever seen a Gatling gun being fired knows that the flare off the end of the barrels is huge. I started to think how I could do this in OpenGL, but drew a blank. Does anyone know how to create flame effects, or a kind of "cloud" of flame? I''m only an intermediate to advanced OpenGL programmer, so I probably haven''t learned some of the methods used to replicate flame, but I''ve had a look around the net, and not found much to go on. Any help would be much appreciated. iNsAn1tY - the place where imagination and the real world merge... Try http://uk.geocities.com/mentalmantle

Do a little searching for ''particle effects/systems'' or billboarding. I am pretty sure it could be done with a billboarded texture placed infront of the barrel of a gun.

Thanks for the input. I believe the scale goes something like this:

Casual Interest -> Beginner -> Intermediate -> Advanced -> Expert

I took a look at NeHe''s particle system, and got some useful info from there. I''ve almost finished modelling the barrel flare on paper, so I''ll be implementing it in code in a while.

Advanced -> Expert -> Demigod -> God -> Carmack -> Me.

(OK, so Carmack is actually better than I am. Screw him! )

You could use a square shallow cone shape model and apply a flash texture to it. To make it look random, just add a few textures to the mix.
