Still unsure of how to get texture maps and load .x files

I am using the engine that The Zen of Direct3D Game Programming and am trying to load meshes. However, any mesh that I create or download from ends up with the default texture that the engine puts on any file which doesn''t have texture coordinates specified. I know the problem is that I don''t have a texture map, but how do I make one and implement it in 3d studio max? Are there any good online tutorials? Also, does every file then need a texture map? Is there a way to just create a blue material, for example, without a map? I am very confused and would be very thankful to anyone who can help to educate me about this. Dan
