Geforce3 Ti VS Geforce3

When the original Geforce3 came out, nVidia said that is was fully compatible with DirectX 8.0. When the Geforce3 Titanium series cards came out, nVidia said that they were fully compatible with DirectX 8.1 Does this mean that the original Geforce3 series doesn''t have access to the new DirectX 8.1 features? (3D Textures and Shadow Buffers says nVidia) Is that just a driver thing? Oh and by the way, how are nVidia''s new "shadow buffers" any different from stencil buffer shadowing which has been around since the birth of the stencil buffer? And how are nVidia''s 3D Textures any different from normal Volume Textures?
