[java] Java and graphics: How do i do it?
Okay, so although i''m a novice in Java, i think i''m ready to move onto more advanced things, including graphics. Now, i''ve searched the internet and tried to find some tutorials, but there is very little, os i come to you people, the GameDev people. I wanna start off with some 2D graphics if possible and move on up from there. I don''t mind using an API, but i need to have the documentation and something to guide me, so if any of you have any suggestions or contributions to this in neway, can u post them or send them to bravolino@hotmail.com ? Thanx
Mike
The Java Tutorial is a great place to look for info on how to do all sorts of stuff in Java. More specificly, you''ll want this.
Also, The API Specification has documentation on every single class, function, and constant in the entire standard Java API. Its usefulness speaks for itself.
Have fun!

I would also like to take this opportunity to recommend Java 2 Game Programming by Thomas Petchel. It was just recently published, and covers the most recent version of the Java SDK, version 1.4. I just bought the book, and I am loving every page. Not only does Petchel tell you how to perform crutial tasks, he also walks you through the structure and code of a complete game. If you are really into game programming with Java, get this book.

Oh is that finally out, cool. Is there a lot of Java specific stuff in there or is it mainly general games programming stuff? How much are the new features of 1.4 covered like the full screen API and NIO?

The book is entirely focused around Java game programming, and covers some of the latest 1.4 features, like VolatileImages, the new full screen capabilities, and an example game that uses network IO. I don''t know how good the coverage is on these topics, as I am still using 1.3.1, but he seems to explain them in at least a moderate amount of detail.

Well I went to check out the book, it says it''s not published yet and will be out the 15th of Dec (granted we''re kinda passed that date so amazon hasn''t updated yet).
Anyways, I ordered it cause I was waiting for a book on 1.4 to be out. I hope it''s worth it''s weight.

I would definately browse this book before buying it. The author seems to think that java can be used to make ''cutting-edge'' games, which most everyone agrees it cannot (it cannot by definition if anyone wants to argue this). Also, having only been programming for 6 years gives me worry. I would be shocked if this book actually covers how to make a complete 8-way side scroller ala 8bit mario. (that''s cutting-edge?)
I''ve been waiting a while for this book, and went looking for it again yesterday at Chapters. It''s still not available here in Canada. Hopefully in the next week or so.
