A good bood on abstract mathematics

Does anyone have any recommendations for books on abstract mathematics? My text for the course is 64 pages of the instructor''s "notes" for his upcoming book. He also requires note taking in class. So I suspect that a good deal of the course is not in the text. I can either listen or take notes, but when I''m done I can''t read my notes so taking notes ends up being about the same as setting their daydreaming for me. A tape recorder is one solution if he allows that. Regardless I suspect I''m going to need a bit more by way of explaination, illustration and exercises than what is provided in the text.
