Large map creation

I am using octree for my terrain maps. But when I build the maps, I don''t know which method is better. I am using 3DS Max 4.2 Build the maps fit the largest size of the octree (the root node''s dimension) or build the maps fit the smallest size of the octree (by using 3DS Max to cut the map into the size)?
