3ds once again...

I''m having problems with my 3ds loading code (written by someone else). It looks fine but seems to be returning funny numbers. As far as I can tell all that''s happening is it''s directly loading the XYZs of the verticies, switching the Y and Z and flipping the sign of the Z co-ord. When I access this data from the arrays it makes, I get funny results and some of the vertex numbers in the faces data are high numbers like 65021 when I have about 1000 polygons in a model. However, the drawing function works perfectly and used glDrawElements and some weird glPointer thing or something. Can anyone help me or provide me with better code?
