Terrain updates

I am using pre-calculated octree for view frustum culling and collision detection culling in my terrain engine. I would like to know, how to do updates of the terrain? Like a mountain grows up from the ground? As this way, I need to re-calculate the terrain octree which causes time. How could I do it? Or any other data structure that''s feasible to do this?
