Traditional children games...
I''m a second year student and i''m majorin'' in Computer Software Eng. And Games Design... this trimester i''ve got a project for a subject called Games Application II. The thing i''ve got to do is to look for Companies that creatively modified primary school games (or Traditional children games) to create Computer Games. Thus i''m wondering if anyone knows any computer game that has been created this way.
Thanx
This is not that relevant, but in the UK most primary schools started out with BBC Microcomputers, with a whole host of software designed specifically for schools, as opposed to rehashes of existing programs.
There were many adventure games made to complement the "Look and Read" television series (also BBC) which was to be used to teach literacy in schools, there were also a few independent adventures made for teaching problem solving, logic and basic maths. The most famous of these were "Dread Dragon Droom", and "Granny''s Garden". Despite the extreme simplicity of playing most of the games, because they were geared towards the lowest age range, they were programmed exceptionally well.
Granny''s Garden was in fact so popular that it has now been re released for windows and mac on cd! (presumably they''ve upgraded it from 8 colour teletext graphics mode)
It also had some of the best music ever used in a game, even though it was only a few seconds long! Have a look for an emulator and give it a try, there are several about.
There was also "L, a mathemagical adventure", programmed for the association of Teachers of Mathematics, and to this day it remains one of the very best text adventures ever made. It is almost as good as Zork in terms of gameplay and originality, and the parser is almost superior to that developed by infocom, but the puzzles are closer to Myst than anything else.
Everyone I know who used these games at primary school remembers them with extreme fondness.

Actually, come to think of it, a lot of the puzzles in Droom were similar to non computer games. It included a tower of hanoi puzzle, a jigsaw-type puzzle, a couple of board game derived puzzles, a join the dot puzzle (with spine tingling sound effects if you lost. Damn, the noise generator on a bbc sound board is good), a sliding block puzzle, and a couple of word puzzles and ridldes, if memory serves.
Maybe Droom is your best bet.

I have heard that Pikachu was created usin'' an old japanese (or chinese) traditional game which is to go through the jungle and find as many different bugs as ya can and then keep them and feed them and make them ready to fight with the bugs that other children had found... so they modified it... and the object of Pikachu is to go through the world and find as many different monsters as ya can.. educate them and so on... this is what i''ve heard ''bout pikachu... this is what i meant of modifin'' children games to create computer games

Your best bet for finding droom is to download a BBC emulator (Ezeebeeb is quite good), and droom will be in one of the game archives you can download to run on it.
The emulator is so detailed that it has a recording of the click made by a relay inside the original machine that plays when you load a tape!
