Graphics Engine

When I have downloaded the SDK I plan to start learning how to use directX with C++. Previously my experience of graphics is somewhat limited. I have created a tile program, but had major problems making the map scroll, and putting characters and collision detection on that I didn''t stand a chance. I have seen people before looking for tile engines etc. Am I better of learning how to do this sorta stuff for myself, or if I download an engine and start using that will i learn more. I don''t want to cut corners, I seriously want to learn, but I don''t know the best way to learn. Is my understanding of what an engine is correct, or again am I confused? Thank-you for your time

Once you get GFX going and are able to blit bitmaps you can hack togheter a simple tile-engine in a afternoon, if you want to know how it works code it, if you just want to use it, d/l somewhere..
