quake2 help-Swap_init

I''m studying the quake2 source code from all the part and I''m starting from the exe part. I want to know what "Swap_init" is swapping and what for? The same code is used in quake1 source too. I''m interested in knowing what''s the idea behind this functions.

it checks if the system Quake is running on is low-endian or big-endian, and sets some variables to determine this later on..
